Mirabai is one of the greatest poet­ saints of the bhakti tradition. From an early age she was enamoured of the spiritual life, and is known for composing many bhajans, specifically for Lord Krishna. She would often get caught up in the spiritual world and thus enter a trance while making music and singing ecstatic songs of praise. The historicity of
Mirabai’s existence is often questioned due to the lack of recorded history, but it is generally agreed that she was born in 1498 into an eminent Rajput household of Rajasthan. Legend has it that she was married off into an even more powerful Rajput family, but because of her complete devotion to Krishna, Mirabai neglected her conjugal
life, and after her husband’s death on the battlefield was persecuted by her in­laws. The lore of her life includes encounters with Chaitanya, Tulsidas, Akbar and Tansen, indicative of the extraordinary stature she enjoys in South Asian tradition. Most of her poetry and music revolve around her soul seeking refuge with Sri Krishna and her longing to unite with him. She is considered to be one of the most devoted saints in the history of India, and her soul lives on in many parts of South Asia where her poetry continues to spread the spirituality she embraced.
